SEC-FansM-I-Z   S-E-C!  The excitement of playing in the Southeastern Conference was contagious.  It spread through Columbia like a virus in a dirty preschool.  Tickets sold at all time high prices, and parking passes were harder to find than a KU football win.   The opening game against Georgia was our big debut.  Columbia citizens and Mizzou fans alike put their best foot forward and welcomed the Georgia Bulldogs to our town.  We needed to show them that we were capable of playing with the big teams of the SEC, and that our fans can rival the great football traditions of the south.  Mizzou tailgators shared food, drink, and conversations with the new conference rivals.  Things like “Welcome to Columbia,”  “So Glad You Came” and “How is your stay?” could be heard all over campus and in The District.   Columbia oozed with kind hospitality and displayed manners that would impress Emily Post.

Well, we all know how it ended.  After a hard-fought loss against Georgia, the reviews were in.  It was said that our fans may be “just too nice for the SEC”.  That is a review we should be proud to hear.  Having said that, next year I’d prefer to meet them, greet them, beat them, and send them on their way with a cordial “Have a safe trip home!”  GO TIGERS!
